Summer in Grand Rapids: My Favorite Ways to Explore the City
One of the best things about living in Grand Rapids is that there's always something happening. Every weekend feels a little different, thanks to the local businesses, community events, pop-up markets, and festivals that make this city feel so alive.
Whether you're new to the area or you've lived here for years, there's always another reason to get out and explore.
Start Your Morning at a Local Farmers Market
Nothing says summer quite like wandering through a farmers market with an iced coffee in hand.
The Fulton Street Farmers Market is one of my favorites, filled with local produce, fresh flowers, baked goods, handmade products, and vendors from all over West Michigan. If you're on the east side, the East Grand Rapids Farmers Market is another great stop for a slower morning. Farmers markets are one of my favorite ways to support local growers and makers while enjoying the community. They also become part of your weekly routine once you live here.
Keep an Eye Out for Pop-Up Markets
One of my favorite things about Grand Rapids is that you never know what you'll stumble across.
Throughout the summer you'll find vintage markets, local maker pop-ups, food truck nights, art fairs, sidewalk sales, and small business events happening across the city. Places like the Downtown Market, Studio Park, Uptown, and local shops regularly host seasonal events that give you a chance to discover new businesses and support local entrepreneurs.
Spend Time Outside
Summer is the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy everything West Michigan has to offer.
Walk around Reeds Lake, spend an afternoon at Frederik Meijer Gardens, explore Millennium Park, or grab takeout and have a picnic by the river. Grand Rapids makes it easy to enjoy the outdoors without leaving the city.
Enjoy the Local Event Scene
One thing Grand Rapids does exceptionally well is bringing people together.
From outdoor concerts and food truck gatherings to neighborhood festivals, outdoor movies at Studio Park, and community celebrations, there's almost always something happening during the summer months. Rosa Parks Circle regularly hosts free lunchtime concerts, and community calendars are packed with festivals and seasonal events that make every weekend feel a little different.
Take a Day Trip
One of the biggest perks of living in Grand Rapids is how close we are to Lake Michigan.
Within an hour, you can spend the day in Grand Haven, Holland, Saugatuck, or Muskegon before heading home that evening. Whether you're looking for beaches, shopping, waterfront restaurants, or a sunset over the lake, it's one of the many reasons I love living in West Michigan.
Support Local Businesses
Some of my favorite days don't involve a plan at all.
They're spent grabbing coffee from a local café, browsing a neighborhood bookstore, discovering a new boutique, or trying a restaurant I've been meaning to visit. It's these small businesses that give every neighborhood its personality and make Grand Rapids feel like home.
Explore More of Grand Rapids
One blog post could never cover everything this city has to offer.
If you're looking for even more recommendations, neighborhood highlights, local favorites, and hidden gems, be sure to explore my Grand Rapids Guide under the Explore Michigan tab. It's where I share the places that make living in West Michigan so special.
Because finding the right home is important, but loving where you live is what truly helps you feel at home.
